Each tour includes a guided stargazing experience under the pristine Karoo sky. You’ll look through a high-quality telescope to see the Moon, planets, star clusters, and deep-sky objects while learning fascinating stories — from modern astronomy to ancient Khoisan and Khoikhoi star lore.

If weather conditions prevent stargazing, we’ll first try to reschedule your tour for another evening. If rescheduling isn’t possible, a refund will be issued.

The Karoo’s weather is usually clear, but we always keep guests informed of any changes.

To make the most of your night under the stars, we recommend bringing:

• Warm clothing – Evenings in the Karoo can get chilly, even in summer.
• Closed shoes – For comfort and safety when walking in the dark.
• Camera or smartphone – You’re welcome to capture the night sky and your experience.
• Curiosity and questions – Bring your wonder for the universe!

To preserve the dark sky and everyone’s enjoyment, avoid:

• No laser pointers – Only the guide uses one for sky pointing.
• No loud music or speakers – We keep the atmosphere peaceful and natural.
• No alcohol or smoking during the tour – It affects focus and the shared experience.
• No pets – Sudden movements or sounds can disturb the group and wildlife.

Depending on the time of year and moon phase, you may see:

• The Moon and its craters in stunning detail
• Planets such as Jupiter and Saturn
• Star clusters like the Jewel Box and Omega Centauri
• Nebulae and galaxies millions of light-years away
• And of course, the Milky Way 

Yes! We offer private astronomy evenings for couples, families, schools, and tour groups. We also host special events during festivals and celebrations

Oudtshoorn is one of South Africa’s premier stargazing destinations thanks to its dry Klein Karoo climate, low humidity, minimal light pollution, and wide-open horizons. These conditions provide exceptionally clear views of the Southern Hemisphere night sky throughout the year.

We use a premium 12-inch Meade Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope for detailed visual observing, together with a Seestar Smart Telescope that displays stunning live images of deep-sky objects in colour.

Yes. Depending on the object being observed, we are happy to assist guests in taking smartphone photographs through the telescope where possible.

When visible, guests can observe planets such as Saturn, Jupiter, Venus, and Mars. The planets visible depend on the time of year.

Yes. Our tours are relaxed and designed for guests of all ages. Minimal walking is required at most venues.
